DD-WRT Linksys Wireless Bridge

In this how to guide I will be showing you how create a wireless bridge between a Linksys 160n wireless router and a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router that has been modded with the DD-WRT firmware.  You might ask yourself what is a wireless bridge.  You also may ask yourself why you would want to create a wireless bridge in the first place. Well a wireless bridge is when you connect one router to another router without using any hard wired cables.  You may want to create a wireless bridge for some of the following reasons.

Computer are located at different ends of your house and you cannot run an ethernet cable between the two routers. You want to link to your neighbors network so you can share internet service, files, and media such as music and movies. The possibilities are endless when it comes to networking routers together using wireless.

For the wireless bridge setup I will be using the following ip address and subnet setup:

The Linksys WRT 160n wireless router will be directly connected to the Internet service, and the Linksys WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router will create the wireless link between the two routers. The best way to setup your wireless bridge is to have a pc that has both a wifi connection and an ethernet connection. To start the installation, use your wireless connection to connect to router 1, which is the Linksys WRT160N.  After you have connected the router, open your web browser and type in the default gateway which should be  Click on the Status Tab and make sure that router 1 has an internet connection.

After you know that the first router has an internet connection, go to the Wireless Security Tab and setup the encryption type and paraphrase key. Make sure that you are using compatible encryption between both of the routers.

After you have set the encryption type and key on the first router, disconnect from this router.  Now connect to the WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router, then go to the setup tab and change the local network to or whatever network range you prefer.

  • Subnet Mask:
  • Gateway:
  • Local Dns:

After you have changed the network setup on your modded DD-WRT router, disconnect from the router then reconnect to so that you receive your new ip address. Your new ip address should be somewhere within the network. Now open a web browser at point it towards, which is now the default gateway for your WRT54GS DD-WRT modded router.

Now go to the status tab and click on the wireless tab.  Within the wireless tab you should see a button that says site survey.  The site survey button is located towards the bottom of the page.  All you have to do now is select router 1 from the list, which should be the Linksys WRT160N.

After you have selected router 1 from the list, go to the wireless tab and click on the wireless security tab.  All you have to do now is input the exact same encryption type and key that you setup for router 1.  After you have set the encryption type and key into your modded DD-WRT router, all you have to do is apply the settings.  You should now have a wireless link between the Linksys WRT160N and the Linksys WRT54GS. Now connect using a wireless connection to the DD-WRT modded router, and make sure your internet connection work.

One Response to DD-WRT Linksys Wireless Bridge

  • Everything above worked great. The only issue I have is having to always re-select the site if power is removed. Is there a setting that would automatically look and connect to during a restart?
